Fade Into You - Novel Extract
When Holly first came back from the dead, she appeared, as a reflection in the bathroom mirror. Her hair inflame as the evening sun cut through the frosted glass. She wore faded Levi’s, torn at the knee and a Sonic Youth t-shirt. The air smelt of coconut shampoo and cherryade. The sight of her paralyzed me. I dared not move for fear that she would disappear. I stood rigid, gazing into the mirror. We stared at each other for a long-time. Then just as she was about to speak she was gone and I was left with my own reflection.
I didn’t recognise the women who gazed back at me. I hadn’t looked at her in months. Dark rings around the eyes, a face gaunt and white. I looked withered, older. I wept at the sight of Holly and at the state of myself.
Holly had been missing for five months, one week and three days. My life was suspended, hung in the ether of not knowing,
In my heart I knew she was dead, I knew the night she vanished. It was like something had been severed
About My Mother - Anthology of short stories
Our relationships with our Mothers are often complex and beguiling. Every friend I can think of has a tale to tell about their Mother, whether it’s filled with love and friendship or frustration and resentment. Whether they have been by your side always or have passed through briefly, they are the beginning of all our stories.
